Component to HDMI adapter in the works?

This little item comes straight from engadget!

Friendly tipster Evan M wasn't too stoked to see an Xbox 360 Elite headed for store shelves after he'd just purchased a Premium 360, especially considering the fact that his TV has a whole HDMI port twiddling its thumbs, just waiting to get its game on. After informing Microsoft of his displeasure through what we're sure was a politely worded email, Evan claims to have received a slightly encouraging response from a Microsoft support person, promising an upcoming HDMI to component adapter for the 'box to make his situation perhaps a bit more bearable. Unfortunately, the support person also mentioned that "we do not have information as of the moment if the cable will be sold separately," which might mean such an adapter is only destined for sales with some sort of updated Premium SKU, at least for the immediate future. We'll keep our eyes peeled.

Forza 2 demo confirmed for April!

A poster by the name of Doc Steel left a post on the wii60 forums with a scan from the May issue of OXM.  According to the scan, there will be a demo of Forza Motorsports 2 in April.  Now I believe the validity of the post, as long as this is not an April fools joke, you know, those false stories that the gaming community throws out there every year at this time, but yet we still report them and believe it.

Guitar Hero instruction manual confirms an Effects Pedal!

The boys over at Joystiq.com got their hands on a copy of Guitar Hero II for the XBOX 360, the game isn't supposed to hit the stores until next week but places like Circuit City and Mal Mart have started selling them a few days early.

When they opened the packaging, they noticed a port on the guitar but they didn't know what it was for.  When they looked at the manual, the port is for an "effects pedal port" (pedals sold separately).

According to Joystiq, the port is the same one that is used to connect the steering wheel and foot pedals on the XBOX 360 force feedback wheel.

One wonders if this is for a sequel in the future or maybe there will be an expansion pack that utilizes the "wha wha pedal".  Now Red Octane has not announced such a thing, but this port is not on the PS2 model and with XBOX LIVE's digital distribution, an expansion pack would be an easy one for Read Octane to release kinda like what Bethesda did with Shivering Isles last week.

Another day 3/30/07!

Physically I am felling better than I did yesterday, this bug is slowly but surly losing the battle.  Today the news was much lighter than it was yesterday, although some pretty cool stuff was announced.  Bungie announced that the new Halo 2 maps can be played on the original XBOX when originally they said that you would have to have a 360 to play them.  Bioshock honored the petition that went around. That petition garnered over 18,000 signatures when only 5,000 were required.

What are you guys going to play tonight? I will probably play some Gears or COD3, I am not sure.

Well I better go I have a rambunctious 3 year old wanting to play right now.

Guitar Hero II receives high marks from IGN!

IGN recently reviewed Guitar Hero II for the XBOX 360 and gave it a 9.4:

Guitar Hero II on Xbox 360 is the best iteration of the hit music rhythm game yet, but it's also an important addition to the Xbox 360 library. On a console dominated by shooters and action titles, it is one of the few titles that everyone can and will enjoy. RedOctane and Harmonix put their best foot forward with this release The result is a port that adds enough content to make it worth a second look from the hardcore fans, especially with the downloadable songs, and a game that is put together so well that all newcomers should give it a try. It's a bit pricey at $90 and doesn't have the wireless guitar we all hoped for, but worth it.

First downloadable content for Bullet Witch released!

Atari today announced the first downloadable content for Bullet Witch is available now on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The first set of new downloadable content includes a free brand new White Witch costume for the game’s stunning heroine Alicia and a Bullet Witch Xbox 360 Theme pack. The next GOW update is almost here!

Today Mark Rein left a post on the Epic forums to let everyone know that the latest Gears of War update is currently in the certification process and we will know more next week.  Mark Also said that there is a new gametype called "Annex" but he doesn't go into detail about the new gametype.

The next title update for Gears of War is currently going through the certification process. We'll have more detail about the update next week but I can tell you that in addition to fixing a whole bunch of glitches, and providing 720p for VGA users running at 1280x1024, it will contain a brand new multiplayer gametype called Annex.

Some folks who got to play it a few weeks ago said they think it is our best multiplayer gametype yet but I'll leave it for you fans to decide what you think for yourself when it shows up soon on Xbox Live. More details next week.

Bioshock collectors edition confirmed, thanks to the petition!

A couple days ago some fans put a petition together asking for a collectors edition of Bioshock.  2k Games responded by saying if the petition garnered 5000 signatures then they would consider it.

Today 2K Games posted this on their website:

Yesterday around 6 PM, EST, I announced that if we collected 5000 signatures on a petition, I could convince 2K to give us a BioShock Limited Edition.

By 11.15 PM, EST, we had met that number. We're still climbing at 14,000, blowing out all my expectations, and then some.

I think I danced into the office today. And now I'm proud to announce to you that 2K will be making a BioShock Limited Edition for both Xbox 360™ and PC.

Now, to the nitty gritty. There are a bunch of polls and threads popping up asking what should go in the box. We've come this far, why not let you, the fans, make the official choice? So now I ask: What would you like in your BioShock Limited Edition?

Vote for your top pick here, and we'll use the winning choices to help us decide what to include.

Halo 2 maps unveiled!

Today Bungie's Frankie O Conner spilled the beans on the new maps for Halo 2:

"It's true! here's the digest version: Two new maps, both available on April 17th through the Halo 2 downloader in the game itself, and it's just $4 for the pair. The maps ar Tombstone and Desolation - remakes of Hang 'Em High and Derelict, respectively.

Go look at 'em right now: New Halo 2 Map Shots!

It's an original Xbox download, so there's no way to use MS points - and you WILL need an Xbox Live Gold account to download and play, since the original Xbox (even in BC mode) can't tell the difference between gold and silver. But you CAN use these on 360, just so we're clear. You just need to use a credit card for the purchase, instead of marketplace points."

Super Contra coming to XBLA!

According to the ESRB website, Super Contra is coming to XBLA and is being published by Konami Digital Entertainment.  There is no release date given but I would assume it is going to be sooner than later.  Also on the list is the classic NES game Rush N' Attack, also being published by Konami Digital Entertainment.

The ESRB list can be seen here!

Crackdown gets auto-update!

The next time you fire up Crackdown you will notice an auto update.  No it's not the Halo 3 beta or any other extra content. The update fixes a few technical glitches and adds more gang vehicles so it isn't such a pain in the ass to get the "repo man" achievement.

UNO reaches 1 million downloads!

Albert Penello, marketing director of XBOX has revealed that UNO the popular XBOX LIVE Arcade title is the first XBLA game to be downloaded a million times.

That is a lot of downloads, but let's be honest for a minute, this game is a blast and it appeals to all demographics. How do I know this? It's called XBOX LIVE vision camera.

Another day 3/29/07!

What a day, I am still trying to beat this nasty bug I have and still stay on top of all this news.  I was also one of the lucky millions that tried to view the GTA IV trailer when the countdown reached zero but all I got was a browser in complete lock down.  Now I know that GTA IV is a highly anticipated game, but damn people.  When you cause Rockstargames.com, Gametrailers.com and Gamevideos.com to completely blow up at once, there is a problem.

Well, I think I am going to go play some video games.  I think it is pathetic that I spend way more time reporting on games than actually playing them, does that make me hardcore? I think so.  But before I play I should check to see if the wife has taken my TV hostage.  For all I know she is watching one of her 1000 hrs of DVR recordings she made of her god forsaken TV shows that she watches.

Later!

Some PGR4 details!

OXM's may issue features PGR4 as the cover story.  I wasn't able too get much information from OXM except that it will hit news stands May 10th.

Despite the run around, I was able to get this list of features that will be published in the magazine.

Enhanced Weather Simulation: “One of the slickest new features in PGR is its weather. Bizarre’s using what it likes to call ‘extreme weather’ for more than just making the sky gray. Water beads up on beautifully on all the gorgeous paintjobs, spray jets out from the tires, and in the in-car view, wipers move and windshields ice up.”

Enhanced Raceway Environments: “A TV-style intro sets up each event, with a commentator offering wisdom…Choppers buzz overhead, camera crews and video vans are everywhere, and hordes of fans line the track. They’ll wear gear with your logo, wave your national flag, and react far more obviously to your performance.”

Extended Car Selection: “PGR4 will deliver a much broader set of vehicles, ranging from a vintage’63 Corvette Sting Ray and the ’54 Maserati 250F to the sleek, ultra-modern Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano.”

On the tracks: “You won’t want to miss out on your viewing time with PGR4’s tracks, which tally up to 200-plus in 10 locations.”

On Xbox Live initiatives: “PGR4’s cooking up a mysterious new matchmaking system (like Halo 2’s).”

On in-car view: ” Bizarre has two key improvements in the works. You’ll now see drivers moving more- feeding the wheel as they zip through turns or pumping their fist after a win. Special effects will also crank up the tension in key moments: you’ll get a shake effect at high speeds, and your vision will blur after spending some quality time with a a wall.”

In conclusion: “PGR4 feels hugely promising- like a proper sequel with loads of cool new toys.”

GTA IV, the trailer that crippled many web sites!

Ken Kutaragi wanted the Spiderman font on the PS3!

CVG is reporting that the PS3 font was inspired by the Spiderman font and Ken Kutaragi himself insisted that they use it.

[Teiyu] Goto explained, "Take the PS2 logo - we created it to blend in with the rectangular shape of the console. Personally, I feel very strongly that the logo would not have looked right on PS3.
"If you really look at the PS3 contour carefully, it is rounded when viewing the console in profile. Rather than creating a typography with all the risks that entails, it was wiser to use the one from Spider-Man, for which Sony has the rights.
"It was also the wish of President Kutaragi, who insisted that I use this typography. In fact, the logo was one of the first elements he decided on and the logo may have been the motivating force behind the shape of PS3."

Valve wants cross platform play with Team Fortress 2!

In a interview with Game Informer, Robin Walker the co-creator of the original Team Fortress, revealed that they would love to do cross platform multiplayer between Vista and XBOX LIVE with Team Fortress 2.

"We’d love to have the Xbox and PC play together, and technically, from our side, there’s no technical reason why you can’t—the engine is the same, the network is the same." Walker explained. "It really comes down to knowing Microsoft has announced that Shadowrun is going to do that, but they haven’t let anyone outside of Microsoft, I mean we don’t have an API or anything."

GTA IV trailer today!

In a little over seven hours, the highly anticipated trailer to GTA IV will be shown.  If you are really board you can go here and watch the clock count down.

The hugely anticipated, new installment in the ground-breaking Grand Theft Auto series is set to arrive in October 2007. Watch the first HD trailer on March 29, 2007.

Grand Theft Auto IV™ is now finally on the horizon.

Worms patch in the works!

Martyn Brown, the studio director at Team17 has updated his blog with news of an update for the recently released Xbox Live Arcade title Worms. This patch will fix several issues with the game, one of the major ones being a problem with 4-player games crashing.
They've also fixed a couple of exploitation issues that have been brought to their attention along with a couple of bugs that were messed during the testing stage of development. You'll also be pleased to know that downloadable content is coming soon, with the first bunch to include a new theme, voice-banks, gamer-pictures and some new audio.

This update still has to go through the certification process before they can release it, but we'll let you know when it's live.

9:00 PM has come and gone-zzzzzzzz!

Tonight was supposed to be the second of two major news items from Microsoft.  I have to say that the day one news story was worth talking about, but the day two news story should be posted on whogivesashit.com!

Microsoft unveiled a new web browser for their Windows mobile platform blah blah blah!

5000 signatures will get you a BioShock collectors edition!

BioShock fans have formed a online petition asking for 2K games and developer Irrational to release a collector's edition.

Surprisingly 2K Games has said that if the petition gets 5000 signatures then they will release a collectors edition.

The petition can be seen and or signed here!

Mexico will give you an XBOX 360 for your gun!

MEXICO CITY, March 27 (Reuters) - Police who have raided vice-ridden Mexico City neighborhoods in a push against drug violence hope to take guns off the streets by offering to swap them for computers and video-game consoles.

Launching the program on Tuesday in the notorious inner-city barrio of Tepito, which police stormed last month, city police chief Joel Ortega said anyone who turns in a high-caliber weapon like a machine gun will get a computer.

Owners can swap smaller guns for cash or Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox video-game consoles under the plan.

Newly elected Mayor Marcelo Ebrard has moved quickly to restore order to the chaotic capital by going after well-known crime dens and clearing the city's narrow streets of informal vendors whose stalls have blocked sidewalks for years.

His moves echo those of new conservative President Felipe Calderon, who since December has ordered the military into several states infested by ruthless drug gangs who killed about 2,000 people last year.

Last month police stormed Tepito, a warren of scruffy homes and market stalls a few blocks north of the capital's main square, seizing a tenement complex known as "The Fortress" -- reputedly a major cocaine and marijuana distribution center.

"This area is a symbol of crime," said police spokesman Ricardo Olayo.

Organizers say they have 100 computers ready for the first wave of the program, each worth 8,500 pesos ($769) and equipped with software donated by Microsoft. On the first day, Olayo said the city received 17 guns, including 12 from Tepito.

If successful, the program will be extended to Iztapalapa, another area targeted by police where last week 800 officers expropriated a six-block neighborhood filled with stores selling parts torn from stolen cars.

Guns that are handed over will be destroyed by the army. The city promised to protect their owners' anonymity.

XBOX 360 ELITE Video!

Sony needs to just shut up!

Today Sony responded to Microsoft's announcement of an HDMI enabled XBOX 360 with a 120GB HDD.  Of course Sony doesn't realize that for $20 less we can get a system with 100GB larger HDD and it comes with a HDMI cable.  C'mon Sony, how do you call the PS3 the ultimate HI DEF experience but you don't even include $10 component cables, let alone a HDMI cable.

"We're focused on reaching out to the mass market beyond the hardcore gamer, through things like LittleBigPlanet, through Home, through the network. We view every single PlayStation consumer as an elite consumer. Meaning no one is going to get shortchanged at the end of the day, whether they bought one on day one or just yesterday," Karraker says. "[The Elite 360] just validates the same business model they were decrying back in November. They said that consumers don't need HDMI, now they have HDMI. They said that 20 Gig was enough to host downloadable content and now they are upgrading that, too. To borrow from my friends at Nintendo, it's kind of a 'me too' side."

Why did I even post this?  This is why I have owned everything that Microsoft, Nintendo, Sega and many other products that these companies put out except for Sony, their arrogant ass attitudes in this industry is just plain sickening!

I also want to mention to Sony that yes the 20GB model is plenty and Microsoft knows this.  But I don't think they planned on the digital distribution of the movies and TV shows that they offer to be as successful as it is.  Besides, if you don't want to download the content that they offer, then the 20GB version is all you need.

It is called choices, Microsoft reads the Forums and listens to the community unlike you guys.  There are people who were crying for a larger HDD and HDMI, so if they do nothing then Microsoft is criticized but if they do something they get criticized.

One more to go!

Microsoft's channel 10 yesterday announced that there will be two big news stories in two days.  The first one being the XBOX 360 Elite which was announced last night, one wonders what tonight's announcement will be.

Make sure you come back at 9:00 PM PST.

Microsoft finally confirms the XBOX 360 Elite!

REDMOND, Washington (AP) -- Microsoft Corp. will sell a version of its Xbox 360 with a 120-gigabyte hard drive and a souped up high-definition video connection, in a bid to broaden the appeal of its popular console beyond video games.

Earlier versions of Xbox 360 came with 20 gigabytes of storage. But that filled up too quickly with movies, TV shows and games from the Xbox Live Marketplace online store, said Peter Moore, a corporate vice president in Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment group.

The new Xbox 360 Elite will sell for $479.99. Consumers who already own the $399.99 20-gigabyte model will be able to buy a snap-on 120-gigabyte hard drive for $179.99.

Both the new console and the drive are expected to hit U.S. shelves April 29.

Microsoft also added an HDMI connection, which sends high-definition content from the console to the TV without losing picture or sound quality, while also helping prevent piracy.

Xbox 360 was the No. 2 U.S. video game console after Nintendo Co.'s Wii in January and February, according to data from market researcher NPD Group. The Xbox outpaced Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, a $599.99 console that plays Blu-ray DVDs.

Microsoft's decision to upgrade the Xbox 360 is the latest of many steps the software maker has taken to position its products at the center of home entertainment.

Microsoft has incorporated Media Center software, which can turn a computer into a digital video recorder, movie and music player, into all but the most basic version of its new Windows Vista operating system.

And Xbox 360 users can connect the console to their home network, then stream movies, music and other content from computer to the Xbox and television. Unlike Sony, Microsoft hasn't added a high-def DVD player to the console, but consumers can buy an external HD DVD player for the Xbox for $199.99.

On Wednesday, Microsoft also announced deals to bring new high-def video to the Xbox Live Marketplace, including New Line Cinema's film "Snakes on a Plane" and upcoming releases from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's direct-to-video division.

Microsoft's focus on downloadable high-def video sets the effort apart from the competition, said Moore. He said the content fills a gap between cable companies' DVR services for fresh TV episodes, Tivo Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.'s standard-definition content available over the Web, and Apple Inc.'s recent move to send iTunes movies and music to the TV from a Mac.

At the core, though, video game players aren't going to choose their system based on its ability to play movies or television shows, said Anita Frazier, an analyst for NPD Group.

"To the extent (the consoles) do other things, it's great, but this industry is all about the games," she said.

Microsoft has a big announcement tonight!

According to channel 10, the official Microsoft news site has said in it's recent post that something big will be announced tonight at 9:00 PM PST.

Two of the coolest Microsoft annoucements since CES are going to be breaking tonight and tomorrow night, and we have exclusive video for both of them. So if you are online at 9:00PM PST tonight (midnight on the east coast) check in to get a full scoop on what your friends will be talking about tomorrow.

And the same goes for tomorrow night, stop by at 9PM PST to see the first official look at a very cool announcement. Feel free to leave your best guesses in the comments, but fair warning; we've hidden Tina's keyboard so she can't spill any secrets. ;)

- Your friends at Channel 10

I wonder what it could be?  some are speculating that the Halo 3 beta will begin tonight/tomorrow and or they will announce that the XBOX 360 Elite is a reality even though we already knew that.  I also find it interesting that this announcement is being made the same day as the XBOX LIVE maintenance.

You can read the announcement from here!

Producer of Crackdown talks DLC!

Crackdown producer Phil Wilson in a interview with Eurogamer spilled the beans on the downloadable content that Realtime World's is working on.  One of the new modes was inspired by this you tube video.  It's nice to know that some of these developers actually listen to the community.

Another one of the updates will have a "reset gangs" option so you don't have to erase your game data if you wanted to play through the game again, Wilson apologized for that oversight.  Wilson also said there will be more but he can't talk about it right now. Hmm I wonder if it has anything to do with the missing 100 achievement points?

Gamestop.com listed the 120GB HDD then took it down!

There isn't a day that goes by that we don't here something about the XBOX 360 Elite and today is no different.  Earlier in the day Gamestop.com posted the 120GB HDD with a ship date of 4/1/07.  Not long after people began to notice this, the Gamestop.com's webmaster's yanked it down.

Without Unreal Championship 2 there would be no Gears of War!

Gamepro editor Vicious Sid sat down with Epic's Mark Rein.  In the interview Mark Rein talked Gears of War DLC and Unreal Tournament III.  He also talks about how important Unreal Championship 2 was to Epic Games.

Unreal Championship 2 for Xbox was a bit of departure for Epic. Was that a successful experience?

That game taught us how to make a console game. It was a hugely successful experience. So without Unreal Championship 2 there would be no Gears of War. It's unfortunate that [the game] came at the end of the life of the original Xbox. If we had done that game three years earlier, maybe we could have owned a big piece of the Xbox. It's just that by the time that game came out, people weren't really buying Xbox games anymore. It was a good game, and we learned a lot from it.

Here Mark talks about Downloadable content for Gears of War:

Can Gears of War fans look forward to more downloadable content?

Absolutely, that's what the Gears team has been working on. So, there's more cool stuff, but we're not ready to spill the beans just yet.

Elder Scrolls expansion, Shivering Isles is now available!

Coming a day early is the expansion to The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion: Shivering Isles.  According to Major Nelson, Microsoft pushed this out a day early so we would all have something to play while XBOX LIVE is down for it's scheduled maintenance.

The expansion will cost you a whopping 2400 points and coming in at just under 1 GIG with an estimated 30 hours of additional gameplay, people should be more than busy for the 14 hours that LIVE is scheduled to be down.

Capcom answers your questions over games going multi-platform!

Capcom's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson went on the Capcom forums to answer some questions in the midst of all this DMC4 outcry.  Some fans wanted to know if Dead Rising and Lost Planet will go multi-platform since DMC4 has.  Christian Svensson responded with:

"Dead Rising and Lost Planet are not slated to appear on Wii or PS3,"

Here Christian Svensson responds to the outcry and petitions that have ensued over DMC4 going to the 360:

"We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes,"

he said in a seperate thread.

"At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying DMC4 to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers."

Team Ninja throws a jab at Devil May Cry 4!

Gamesradar.com recently sat down with Yosuka Hayashi, the producer of Ninja Gaiden Sigma for the PS3.  Towards the end of the interview he throws a jab at Devil May cry 4 by saying that the enemies just stand there.

GR: Moving along those lines, have you seen Devil May Cry 4? Do you have an opinion on it?

YH: I have seen Devil May Cry 4, but it's basically a totally different philosophy from what we do. If you look at their trailer that they have online, you'll see that none of the enemies attack you. None of the enemies attack whatsoever. That's a game where the enemies only exist to provide a target for all of your combos, and they don't really do anything else. For us, we're a combat-action game; our enemies are alive, they think, they attack you, and if you don't actively defend yourself, you're going to die really quick. So it's a basic difference in philosophy. We're an action game, they're kind of a "let's see how stylishly we can show off these combos and get a high score" kind of thing. So if the people playing think that's stylish, then more power to them.

Games for the week of 3/26!

Wow I hope you don't get too excited over these 2 amazing yet who gives a shit games for this week.

GRAW for $19.99!

This week Circuit City is having a sale on some select games for only $19.99.  One of these games is the original Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for the XBOX 360 and at that price I recommend you pick it up if you didn't the first time around.

More 360 Elite details emerge!

The following is from Kotaku.com:

The San Jose Mercury News' Dean Takahashi has a bit more details on the rumored Xbox 360 Elite edition that Game Informer reported on earlier this month.

Game Informer had already reported that the new, black 360 would come with a 120-gig hard drive and HDMI out and sell for $479.

Takahashi adds that the new 360 will habe IPTV capabilities, something I suggested would make sense, and that the new design will also implement the a chip redesign, shifting from 90 nanometer to 65 nanometer, resulting in a significant drop in cost to Microsoft.

Takahashi adds that he thinks the introduction of the new 360, which will be produced in limited quantities, will not effect the price of the current core or 20-gig models.

I suspect that this new model will hit in April, with official word coming as early as next week. I also wouldn't be surprised that if consumer interest shifted to the newer model, that Microsoft drops the price on their current models by this holiday season. Brian Crecente
