Multiplatform games may jump ship and become 360 exclusives!

Game journalist Geoff Keighley revealed in a Newsweek blog that  some previously announced mult-platform games might be pulling out of the PS3 camp in favor of being an  XBOX 360 exclusive if the sales of the PS3 continue to sell under a 100K units a month.

And we both know the sales need to pick up, pronto--especially if Sony wants to keep third party interest. Already third party executives are telling me that if PS3 sales stay below 100k for 3 consecutive months, PS3 SKUs may start disappearing from release lists and in turn create a wealth of de-facto exclusives for the Xbox 360.

Why would they not want to release a game on as many SKUs as possible? Unless the cost of a port would be greater than the potential profits, I suppose. Somebody please explain the logic behind this statement.

It can cost a lot more and delay launch dates if you have to try to develop for two very different consoles. Not only that, but if you're developing multi-platform then you have to cater to the weaknesses of both systems. Being an exclusive is cheaper and quicker, and you can really focus on improving the game for that console's strengths.

Dumb! Any multiplat dev like Ubisoft and Take2 makes tons of money by even putting out crappy ports.

Say, 11 MIL 360s and 4.5 MIL PS3 by August...you think they'd ignore that potential user base? Please, they'd be dumb. That's why multiplat devs have done timed releases recently. They are just giving the PS3 time to grow it's user base.

What you say is true at launch when there were only a few thousand PS3 owners. But as each user base gets saturated, and development for one system is done. They always look for ways to expand their library.

Come on guys. Think!

Oh, and if you haven't heard. The PS3 now upscaled DVDs, PS1/PS2 games. And displays Blu-ray movies at 24fps. Updated today.

Oh and guys...you might want to read the WHOLE newsweek blog article instead of the silly "headline" on this xboxgamernews blog.

I guess the reason for a developer to publish a game exclusively for XBOX360 is purely economical. When they develop a game multiplatform they have to pay fees to publish a game for a console. I believe this is about 10$ per game sold (depending on the popularity of the game and individual deals of course).

Now if they go exclusivem Microsoft could reduce that to 5$ or even zero. The profit of this 5$ if they sell 300.000 games is 1,5million $. Obviously they do the calculation and expect to have much less income from Selling on PS3 at the same time, considering the higher costs of developing as well.

Pure economics :-)
